Fever or chills accompanied by rectal discomfort
could be symptoms of a common and easily cured
condition. Unfortunately, many people are
embarrassed by anal or rectal problems and delay
consulting a doctor. Something as simple as an
infected gland (or abscess) may develop into a
fistula requiring surgery if left untreated.
Abscesses and fistulas are both benign
conditions which can usually be treated on an
outpatient basis.
An anal abscess is an infected cavity filled
with pus found near the anus or rectum and is
the result of an infection of a small gland
inside the anus. An abscess is treated by
draining the pus from the infected cavity.
